How to stop shrinking yourself as a creator

I pivoted my business direction because I was hiding behind the term ‘Cozy’.

I was creating everything cozy blogging, cozy business, cozy creator and so on. And then I asked myself, am I really even living a cozy life?

The answer was a bold NO.

Then I went deep inside myself and asked why was I limiting myself to this cozy niche. My ideas and vision were much larger than just having a cozy blog. I want to empower people especially the ones who are shy and have low self esteem to become the best version of themselves.

I want to encourage creators to become SO confident that they create their dream life by just trusting their own gut.

I want to teach confidence to creators, entrepreneurs, coaches and bloggers.

Then I realized that I was playing small and hiding behind a pinterest trend of being a cozy blogger to avoid showing up online in the world.

I limited my own growth and confidence and ability to reach a global audience as a creator. And today in this blog post, I will share how you should not do this to yourself and step fully into your power, embrace your life as a niche and grow confidently as a creator. If you’re into video based content, check out my video on this topic

1. Understand and become aware when you are shrinking yourself

The very first step is always awareness. Did you ever try to ask yourself whether you do these on a daily basis?

  • Always over-apologizing when you’re creating content or in general to people
  • Shying away from sharing your opinions and ideas confidently
  • Avoiding sharing your ideas publicly in the form of videos, posts, content because it’s not perfect enough
  • Always worrying what people will think if you show up online

All of these are classic signs of shrinking yourself in front of others.

Well, if you’ve already done the work of identifying these points, then congratulations you are aware that you are doing this to yourself. The next step is to start changing this mindset.

2. Start Rewiring Your Mindset

As a content creator, if you want to stop yourself from shrinking yourself in front of others, then start to develop a confident mindset.

Remind yourself that you don’t have to be perfect to be authentic.

With the advent of AI, audience wants the real authentic version of you. You do not need to portray a filtered version of yourself.

If you think if you are constantly scared or fearful, it means it is working. Growth never comes from comfort. The more you challenge yourself to do uncomfortable things and put yourself in fearful situation, it helps you expand as a creator

Creator Tip: Start your mornings with powerful affirmations like

“I am enough. My voice matters. I am meant to be seen.”

You can write your own affirmations as well. Go to YouTube and there are endless videos on affirmations.

3. Protect yourself by setting boundaries

If you do not protect yourself and your energy, you will continue to shrink yourself and please everyone else. Constantly overextending yourself for other people means you’re walking all over yourself all the time.

So learn to protect yourself. Remember to do the following as a content creator:

  • You don’t have to say YES to every opportunity
  • Feel comfortable saying no to opportunities that do not align with your skillset and values even if you’ve to leave a lot of money on the table
  • Stop comparing yourself to other creators. It kills your uniqueness
  • Start designing a content system. Bring structure to your life. Make sure the schedule works for you and not what others are using for themselves.

Creator Tip: Plan your week based on your energy levels. Dedicate a single day for filming high value content. Split up days by activities. No need to film and edit on the same day. Also, practice rest.

4. You need to practice to show up boldly

As solo content creators, we sometimes tend to set impossible goals for ourselves. It is not necessary to go from 0 to 100 overnight. Not only it is detrimental to your growth, but one wrong viral video can kill your natural growth.

So focus on creating with intention, purpose and boldly!

  • Practice consistency. Share videos everyday or post everyday. Even if it is a small part of you but show up online daily. It builds the confidence muscle
  • Show up by being yourself. Share your ideas, opinions boldly out loud with the world.
  • Do not be afraid to speak the truth. Especially your truth. Mention it in your videos, caption, newsletter.
  • Do not be shy to experiment with new formats. Social media is constantly changing so embrace the cringe.

Build your confidence with every small action online. This will indirectly build your mindset of being seen without fear.

5. Every win and growth must be celebrated

If you get 1 subscriber or 300 views on a post, remember that is still growth and a huge win.

Universe rewards gratitude. The more thankful you are for getting more visibility online, universe rewards you with abundance.

Don’t do the mistake of bashing yourself in case you do not meet your goals

  • Start to monitor your progress everyday
  • Watch posts that get the highest engagement even if they are not perfect
  • Think about how far you have come each week. Do a self reflection of your own content journey.

All of the above points is constantly going to help you reinforce your self esteem, your beliefs and your self. It will indirectly motivate you to keep showing up online.

6. Keep building a support system online and offline

As a content creator, you will thrive when you’ve a strong support system. It’s important to surround yourself with amazing creators who:

  • Cheer for you and empower you when you need it the most.
  • Work and interact with like minded fellow creators
  • Network with creators in your niche
  • Find mentors who are confident and visible and learn their strategies
  • Build a community early to share your wins and make friends

This community system reduces fear and also helps you to know that others are going through a similar journey. It also helps you stay accountable and boosts self esteem. Not to mention, you get to have friends in the same niche!

7. Don’t wait to take action

I would encourage you to stop shrinking as a creator today. Take action starting right now whether big or small. Go post that content. Go upload that video. Go create that content

  • Show up consistently even if you’re not feeling upto it
  • Speak your ideas and opinions with immense confidence
  • Be yourself in your own voice especially when it feels scary

Give the world and your audience the real you. The world needs authenticity more than ever. It’s time to start creating content with confidence and not be afraid of what everyone thinks.

Final thoughts

If you want to create true impact as a content creator, adopt a confident mindset, create with intention and live a life filled with purpose. When you embrace this strategy, the world starts to change.
